My path to marathon was not exactly as cut and dry as I had anticipated. Many of you know that last summer I signed up for the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon mid-March, to coincide neatly with my 40th birthday a few days prior. Then 10 weeks into training, my foot gave me a mild panic attack and decided it wanted the safety and security of a brace for a few weeks.
But I’m one to make lemonade out of lemons (with a splash of something harder some days). While the March marathon was seemingly out of reach, May was not. Since 3rd times the charm, I had already decided to “Run Home” to Pittsburgh by participating in the UPMC Pittsburgh Half Marathon – the race which holds my half marathon PR.
But then this minor blip on the running screen turned into an opportunity. An opportunity to rest, to heal, to get back on the horse and implement all my marathon training lessons learned to date; and lastly and most importantly an opportunity to run my first FULL marathon at HOME. My parents are pretty ecstatic and I’m sure will be the loudest voices out there when I cross the finish line. The thought makes me giddy inside.
As a bonus, I was selected as an Official Home Run Blogger for the Pittsburgh Marathon. I’ve mentioned this softly a couple of times but consider this the “Official” announcement. Follow me as I blog, tweet and bring you along on this journey home. And please visit my fellow #RunHomePGH bloggers: Pittsburgh Runner, This Runners Fuel and Stop, Drop and Blog.
When things happen that seem to take you off the course you’ve chartered it’s easy to immediately question why and garner a woe is me attitude. Not this gal. I was meant to run at this moment, at this time, in this race. And I for one cannot hardly wait. Stay tuned…
