Friday Five: Races to Run in 2015

Following my post yesterday on my new goal in life – running a half marathon (or any distance race really) in all 50 States I’m doubly excited for today’s Friday Five with my DC pals Cynthia and Courtney. Why? (well, besides the obvious…) Because it’s all about races to run in 2015! And I need ideas πŸ™‚Β FF_races to run 2015

ONE: Shamrock Marathon and Half Marathon in Virginia Beach. March 22, 2015. This should need no explanation given it’s my first major spring race of the season (Myrtle Beach doesn’t count, I was under trained and sick!) But I’ve dedicated the past nearly 2 months to getting myself ready for sub-2 here. This was the scene of the crime for my deferred due to injury marathon a year ago. BUT… I LOVE J&A races and think they do a great job. It’s also on the cusp of the first day of spring, the course is flat and it’s the BEACH!!! (hello?!) Time will tell if I meet my goal here but either way, it is one to look forward to and it’s not yet sold out. πŸ˜‰Β

TWO: Pittsburgh Marathon and Half Marathon. May 3, 2015. I love, love, LOVE my hometown race – hills and all – and I’ll be back for year #4 on May 3rd. Even better I was selected to represent again as an official #GameOnPGH blogger for marathon weekend. More on that to come but this another not yet sold out race – come join me!Β 2015_GOP_Blogger_Banner

THREE: Crawlin’ Crab. October 4, 2015. The thing about spring and fall is there are SO many fun and cool races going on and just not enough time. Another J&A sponsored race I loved my Crawlin’ Crab experience in October 2013 and recommend it to any and everyone I see. I’ve kept it on my radar and WILL do it again, just not any time soon. Above all else, the 3 beers and bread bowls of soup you get at the indoor finish line party and this guy will always be one of my favorites:

I think I will call him "Crabby!"

I think I will call him “Crabby!”

FOUR:Β Marine Corps Marathon. October 25, 2015. If you have any desire or hope to run a marathon and can get in – this one is it. In 2015 it’s the 40th anniversary of the MCM so it will be a little tougher but it is sure to be a pretty exciting and heartwarming atmosphere, guaranteed.Β MCM 2015FIVE: Laughlin/Bullhead Half Marathon. December 5, 2015. You might recall me mentioning some changes to my race calendar and winning a free entry to this race during #Runchat on Twitter many weeks ago. If not, well this is an inaugural race in Laughlin, Nevada (new state!) about 90 minutes south of Las Vegas. The race actually runs through TWO states Nevada and Arizona (cough Helly cough) so I can kill 2 birds with one stone on that 50 states goal! I’m in discussion with the race director to offer an opportunity to win a FREE race entry for someone (anyone!) to join me so stay tuned. BUT USE ‘DAMRUN’ TO GET $15 UNTIL MARCH 21, 15!!

And can I say how difficult it is to plan fall racing when the NFL hasn’t released the 2015-16 schedule yet?! πŸ˜‰ Alright, anyone running any of the above races? What one race do you recommend as a must do?Β

    1. haha – you can’t go wrong with any of these! except the last one, it hasn’t been done before so can’t vouch for how great it’ll be but I am looking forward to it.

  1. Sounds like you’ve got a good list of races to do! I love that you can run a half marathon in May or October. I may have to start traveling up to that area to run some races! During those months in Florida, the best you will find is a 5K, maybe a 10K, if you are lucky.

  2. Great goal to race in every state! I’ve heard so many good things about J&A races and would love to do both Shamrock & Crawling Crab. But I hate driving, so the drive to Pgh is just too much for me, maybe if I could find a carpool… Congrats on being a Pgh Marathon blogger! I was invited to be one too & am super excited!

  3. The Crawlin’ Crab is speaking to me. The medal is so cute. There are so many races to chose from and only one me! {Sigh} Congrats on winning the race entry. It will be awesome to run in both states.

  4. I love that you’re planning your races around the NFL calendar! A girl after my own heart! I’ve been getting much more into football lately and plan on watching more of the games next season, so this is something I’ll be taking into mind also. That crab medal is adorable btw! πŸ™‚

  5. I love your all 50 states goal! I’m really excited about my Asheville half next month (if my silly calf will heal up by then!) because I love the mountains and the Asheville area.

  6. I have heard great things about the Pittsburgh Marathon but I am a Cleveland girl (rivals!) and the Cleveland marathon is the week after Pittsburgh! I will have to do it one year though and muscle through all the black and gold πŸ™‚ I absolutely love the MCM but will miss it this year. I am trying to get in the New York Marathon and if all else fails…I will go to Philly πŸ™‚

    1. Yeah… “rivals” I don’t think of that with Cleveland πŸ˜‰ I am hitting Ohio at the end of May though! I’m still on the fence about another marathon but if I do #2, MCM would be it!

  7. Sounds like a great list! I haven’t ran any but have heard great things about each. If I’m still on the East coast next year, I would love to do Shamrock Half and a Pittsburgh race. Pretty neat you plan to run a race in every state!

  8. These all sound great! I love planning race calendars. It’s so rewarding to get everything scheduled.

I won’t be running any of those this year, but my friend is from Pittsburgh and wants to do a girl’s ti there for a half one of these days. So we shall see.

  9. Congrats on getting to rep Pittsburgh again! It’s always fun to go home. Love love love that you put two of my beloved J&A races up! Can’t wait until Shamrock! You totally have to run Crawlin’ Crab again soon. The craft beer fest totally kicked it up a notch πŸ™‚

  10. all of those sound fun, but I’m definitely adding Shamrock and Crawlin’ Crab to my wish list. Although after this winter, I”m afraid to try and train for any races earlier than May.

    1. just write a Friday Five post and click the linkup button! We do this every Friday and if you check the “Friday Five Linkup” page on my blog you’ll get the themes each week. Not necessary to follow the theme as it’s a prompt but people tend to put their own spin on them!
