Beach to Beacon 10K Training Week 6

Um, can someone please explain to me how 6 weeks came and went in a flash? I’m finding it so hard to believe the TD Beach to Beacon 10K is this Saturday. It truly seems like I was just finding a bib, making plans and starting to train. But alas, the time is near so today I’m recapping my Week 6 training effort. B2B weekly training

Monday: REST

Tuesday: 3 mile run + yoga. Actually, it was 2.8 miles on the treadmill and awful. Following Blogher15 weekend in NYC I think I used up my energy reserves and probably should have taken another rest day. Duly noted. However, I did pull it together long enough to take in an outdoor yoga class later than evening. YogaYardsPark

Vida Fitness DC has weekly FREE yoga along the waterfront in Yards Park so I was joined by one of my classmates and her friend for the adventure. This particular session happened to be sponsored by Reebok and Sweet Green so there was a raffle for Reebok shoes, free Reebok towels and salads provided by Sweet Green. VidaYoga marontherun.comAside from the annoying bugs the humidity brings, it was a fun night out along the river! YardsPark jump

Wednesday: Speed work = 4.25 miles. I had signed up for Zengo Cycle at lunchtime but went to the wrong location (d’oh!). Everything that could go wrong this day, did. So I went home to regroup and start again. After a bit of rest and recalibration of my training schedule for the week I headed to the treadmill and decided to do a short ladder and reverse ladder workout. It was hard but BAM:

  • 200m @ 8:20 pace
  • 400m @ 8:20 pace
  • 800m @ 8:20 pace
  • 1200m @ 8:34 pace
  • 800m @ 8:27 pace
  • 400m @ 8:20 pace
  • 200m @ 8:13 pace

I did short recovery jogs/walk between each set and a cool down walk for a total of 4.25 miles. I was hurting – and wish I had planned fueling a bit better prior – but I also was supposed to be spinning instead 🙂 This wraps up my speed work plans for the Beach to Beacon so go big or go home, right?

Thursday: Body Pump. And ow… their new release is killer and my booty was feeling the squats for days!

Friday: Hot Power Fusion @ Core Power Yoga. This was going to be a rest day but Cynthia was looking for an end of day workout partner prior to her evening assignment. Given how sore I was I thought hot yoga would be the perfect solution so we met up in Georgetown for class and it did not disappoint! Mar_Cynthia

Saturday: Crystal City Twilighter 5K. I signed up for this race earlier in the week after getting an email from Run Pacers thinking a night time run would be cool! I won’t write a separate race recap for it but it was a quick out and back on Crystal City drive in Arlington, VA. They gave us glow sticks (how fun?!) and a great tech T: Twilighter5k

With no time goals in mind I ran conservatively. My Garmin has officially gone mad and I’m afraid it’s time to break up with my boy toy. Somehow after charging it converted to a completely different language and tracked in Kilometers. For real? That didn’t help with my pacing as I started a bit too fast and ended up walking a bit in the last mile. I finished the 5K in 30:19 / avg pace 9:46. While cooler at 8:30-9 pm it is DC so there was still humidity and lots of sweat!

In any case, it was a nice end to a Saturday and lucky me I got to see both my DC Trifecta partners in crime this weekend, meeting up with Courtney briefly after the race as well as Jenny. Bonus was meeting new blogger and reader Bri who sought me out! Twilight5k

Sunday: REST. Packing and errands tore into all my open time.

I didn’t workout as hard as I hoped this week but 5 out of 7 days with a couple of yoga sessions is not bad. Now it’s time to get ready for my trip to New England. Hope you all have a marvelous week!! And don’t forget, DC area bloggers you’re invited to the DC Trifecta (me, Cynthia and Courtney) hosted fitness bloggers brunch on Saturday, August 8!! RSVP HERE

    1. I know, it’s crazy though that some of my speed work sessions are at paces I used to run consistently. I’ve gotten slower 🙁 looking forward to the race!

  1. I’m so excited for your race this weekend, Mar – woo hoo!!! Time flies, right? Good grief. I can’t believe it’s almost August – GAH! I’m so glad y’all were able to do the night race together; I think that would be lots of fun. Thanks so much for linking up; hope your week is going well!
