Philadelphia Half Training Update

While Milwaukee was to be my only long distance race this fall, I received a complimentary entry into the Philadelphia Half Marathon. This race has been on my want to do list for awhile so I’m excited for the chance to participate – and bonus, hang out with my buddy Lisa!Philly Half marontherun.comGiven that there were only 3 weeks between half marathons I had to think quickly about my approach to this race. First off, I met my time goal in Milwaukee and since then have been focusing on changing up my eating habits and getting back to more strength training in an effort to lose weight. I’m going to run Philadelphia for fun (ie. no time goal) but definitely look to be a bit stronger on the road to my next half. Here’s what I’ve been up to the last couple weeks: 

Sunday, 11/1: Milwaukee Half

Monday, 11/2 & Tuesday, 11/3: REST and a lot of active recovery walking around the Chicago lakefront before traveling back to DC.

Wednesday, 11/4: REST + Massage. Then a BIG surprise. After the massage I arrived home to an email from the spa thanking me for being a loyal customer with a $50 gift certificate attached. I’ve been lamenting the fact that I need a pedicure bad so now I know what I’m doing with this!! Thanks SO much Nusta Spa. Seriously the best spa in DC!

Thursday, 11/5: Spinning @ Zengo Cycle

Friday, 11/6: 30 minutes elliptical + weight training

Saturday, 11/7: Spinning @ Zengo Cycle 

I did not run at all following the Milwaukee Half. This is typically my M.O. after a long distance race/training cycle. Even knowing Philly was coming I gave my legs a few days rest then hit the ground running again with cross and strength training activities before picking up running again.

Sunday, 11/8: REST

Monday, 11/9: 4 miles + HIT Yoga @ Urban Athletic Club. And used that gift certificate from the spa – pedicure yo! HIT Yoga Pedicure marontherun.com

Tuesday, 11/10: 15 minute stationary bike warm up + Body Pump

Wednesday, 11/11: Spinning @ SoulCycle. This was my first time checking it out and yes, there will be a review! It was fun but over so quickly!

Thursday, 11/12: REST. I had a HIIT workout planned but man, was feeling the effects of those 3 heavy workouts earlier in the week. Ouch.

Friday, 11/13: 3 mile run

Saturday, 11/14 and Sunday, 11/15: REST. I traveled to Pittsburgh for family stuff over the weekend. My littlest nephew turned one!! Sunday I had plans to run 8-9 miles but events and long car rides took over. I’ll get in a few quality workouts this week and be ready to go in Philly!

  1. I think you will enjoy this race! I ran the full marathon a few years back and thought the course was beautiful for a city race, it was also pretty well run too! Loved that it starts and ends at the “rocky steps”, I couldn’t resist going back later that evening and stretch the sore legs out by running up the rocky steps and having a few pictures taken:)
