5 Ways to Celebrate Global Running Day!

Happy Friday and Memorial Day weekend! I hope you have some fun plans in store and also take some time to honor those who gave their lives while serving. Joining Courtney and Cynthia for our weekly Friday Five linkup where today is “free” Friday. The annual National Running Day was always the first Wednesday in June. It has morphed into a worldwide celebration and is now Global Running Day and since it’s coming up next week (June 1) I’m sharing 5 ways to celebrate! celebrate global running day marontherun.com

1. Well obviously the first and BEST way to celebrate is by lacing up and hitting the pavement. Even better is to grab a buddy or two (or 3 or 4!) and get your run on together!

2. Pledge to run. The Global Running Day website has a tool where you can pledge to run on June 1 and an option to log a specific distance. There is also a million kid run so if you have kiddoes, pledge them too!

3. Visit/support your local running store. If you’re unable to run or just in need of some gear or supplies – wait until Wednesday and check out what your local stores have to offer. Some might even be having events for the occasion.

4. Sign up for a race! Race discounts will be everywhere on this day so if you’ve been waiting or on the fence, keep your eyes peeled for a Global Running day deal.

5. Give back! I have several friends running fall marathons for charity (I’m looking at you Helly and Courtney). It’s been on my to do list to get to them all so I plan on taking a few minutes on Wednesday to support their efforts!

And since I’m on the topic of charity, every year the United Way of the National Capital Area has a 24 hour campaign called Do More 24 to raise funds in support of local non-profits. One of my favorite local organizations is obviously Girls on the Run DC. I’ll be back coaching in the fall and would love the support to this amazing organization in celebration of Global Running Day. Consider doing more on Thursday, June 2 (or before then if so inclined!!) Visit their donation page for more information and locals (or those who want to support the DC chapter) consider giving a gift during Do More 24 on Thursday, June 2 – the day after Global Running Day.

Cheers to a long – and warm – weekend!! Any plans for Memorial Day? are you looking forward to Global Running Day?  DC Trifecta Friday Five linkup

  1. I have loved celebrating National running day the past few years- its so exciting that its now global! Of course i will be celebrating with a run and I will also need to look out for some race discounts!

  2. This is the first year that I’ve actually got run planned for Global Running Day (come on body, don’t let me down!) and we have Running Coaches Corner that day, so I will definitely be celebrating!

  3. I plan to go to our local Fleet Feet store for NRD. I did not know about the race discounts but will check those out too.

  4. Maybe Wednesday is when I’ll lace up my sneakers and get a run in for the first time since my race. That’d be a good time to do it, and I completely forgot about national running next week. Thanks!

  5. GOTR is such a great organization! And I love the idea of Do More 24! Enjoy the long weekend!!

  6. That’s a great tip about visiting your local running store. I bet they will be having some great specials. I hope to be get a nice run in on that day as well. Enjoy your long weekend and thanks for the link-up!

  7. I love GOTR too!! I was one of the founding members of the GOTR Montgomery County council. Love that organization! Thanks for the info about Do More 24! I’m going to check that out.

  8. I think my local running store is having an event… maybe I’ll check it out. Regardless, I’m looking forward to getting in some miles and maybe scoring a race discount or two. Have a great long weekend!

  9. I’m not scheduled to run on June 1, but I love the idea so much I’ll have to step out & get in a quick few miles!

  10. I must have been out of touch as this is the first year I’ve heard of Global Running Day – I’ve received emails from various organizations regarding the even but I don’t remember receiving any last year. Nevertheless, what a great way to celebrate ‘Running’! I’ve wanted to volunteer for GOTR but the schedule never worked out for me plus now it’s harder with having 2 young girls, although I look forward when they get older and are able to join it.

    1. it was called National Running Day last year. This is the first time it’s been made Global so that’s probably why. I wasn’t able to do GORT this season but did last fall and will do again. It’s a lot of work to coach but definitely worth it!

  11. I plan on celebrating with a run. My local running store has a social run scheduled with festivities afterwards…should be fun!

  12. I hope you had a great holiday weekend! I am going to run on Global Running Day with the City Fit Girls, they are always such a fun time! I do need to see if I can find some deals on races (as if I need any more, LOL) and the United Way is a great charity!
